Choose Love: When an Opinion Becomes a Commitment
Christians hold the belief that human life is sacred, not to be
taken at the whim of any individual. Scriptures speak of God's
relationship with persons yet in the womb, like David in Psalm 139
and Paul in Galatians 1:15. The same word is used in scripture
for the infant before and after birth (Luke 1:41 and 18:15).
In ancient times, child sacrifices of nations around Israel--and
Israel herself--were an abomination to the Lord. And God
always calls His people to intercede for the weak and
helpless. So, the case against taking innocent human life,
whether before or after birth, is compelling and convicting to those
who will listen.
It is right to hold the opinion that abortion is against the will
of God. Nevertheless, holding an opinion doesn't save a life
or rear a child or give hope to a young woman who sees her life
falling apart. Surely, one who sees the true value of life
should also grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of
Christ--this "love that surpasses knowledge." For it is
Christ's love that is not content to hold an opinion, but rises up
to help the desperate, whether innocent or sinful, even if it
requires personal sacrifice. The One that Christians follow
showed well the kind of sacrifice that love may require.
Some have reacted wickedly and mistakenly with violence against
the practice of abortion, but God has not called His people to
physically attack at any time since He submitted Himself to the
violence of evil men. Rather, He loved His enemies and prayed
for their forgiveness. Christ reserved His indignation for those who
maintained only a veneer of goodness. For humble sinners, His
response always was, and is, mercy.
Christian Family Services exists because life is sacred and
because God is love. If those concepts are inseparable to you,
too, help us save lives and repair lives through love. We pray
that "your love may abound more and more." And we pray your
love will be expressed in a commitment to be there--no matter what
it takes. For CFS, and for the women who are struggling to
choose what is good and right for their babies and their lives.
